Celiac Disease
What is Celiac Disease?
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that attacks and damages the small intestine. When gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye and barley) enters the system, an immune response occurs, damaging the villi, tiny fingerlike projections that line the small intestine. Villi promote nutrient absorption and when they are compromised, malnourishment can occur and lead to additional serious health problems.
Symptoms of Celiac Disease
Symptoms of celiac disease vary from person to person and may not be confined to the digestive system. However the most common symptoms of celiac disease include abdominal fullness and bloating, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, nausea and vomiting.
