Education
- Master of Science - Nurse-Midwifery Program, Frontier Nursing University, Hyden, KY
I began my nursing education with a focus on public health because I wanted to make an impact on the larger community. However, as I got further along in nursing school, I met many midwives and realized I had a natural draw to babies and pregnant women. I discovered that midwifery is yet another way to make an impact on the larger community – woman by woman, and baby by baby.
A midwife is in a unique position to build a trusting partnership with patients and their support persons. The midwifery model of care makes patients the star of the show and supports the conviction that individuals are experts in their own health. While supporting patients through labor and birth as a nurse, I could feel the trust and connection that ran so deeply between the patients and midwives. I became a midwife because I wanted to support my patients beyond birth and help them lead healthier lives. I now strive for my patients to feel the same support during every interaction we have.
Having my own babies helped me connect with families and answer the many questions they have about integrating a new child into their lives – whether the child is their first or fifth. I strive to present my patients with the best, evidence-based information available about physical, emotional and mental health, and then empower them to make their own decisions. Everybody is on their own journey, and as a midwife, I’m very respectful of that.
When I’m not with my patients, I love spending time with my family and watching my children experience new adventures every day.
