Endocrinology focuses on the endocrine system – the complex network of glands that produces
and regulates hormones. This system includes the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal
glands; the pancreas; and the gonads.
Hormones, powerful chemical messengers that travel through your bloodstream to your organs
and tissues, regulate and control a range of physiological processes. Hormones influence almost
every aspect of the way your body functions, as well as your overall mood, so any imbalance can
lead to significant health issues.
Most endocrine disorders are caused by either too much or too little of a hormone – or your
body’s inability to correctly respond to it. The most common diseases include diabetes (Type 1
and Type 2), hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid),
Addison’s disease, Cushing’s syndrome and polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS.
Endocrinologists at Northwest Endocrinology at La Cholla are specially trained to treat and manage these
diseases, as well as many others. Your endocrinologist might order lab tests, imaging studies or
genetic testing to determine what is causing your issue. Treatment may involve hormone
replacement therapy (HRT), medications to stimulate or suppress the production of a certain
hormone, or lifestyle changes (particularly for conditions like diabetes and thyroid disease).
Endocrine disorders often require long-term management, monitoring and adjustments to
treatment as your body’s needs change over time.
We will work closely with you to help you make the right treatment decisions based on your
individual needs and other health issues. Whatever your issue and whatever your goal, we strive
to help you achieve the best possible outcome.
